Border crossings & documents FAQ
What do I need to cross the Busia border by bus?
Carry a valid passport or, for Kenyan, Ugandan and Rwandan citizens, a national ID accepted under East African Community rules. Have your Yellow Fever card ready, keep your Modern Coast ticket reference handy, and expect to step off the coach at both the Kenyan and Ugandan immigration desks.
Is a Yellow Fever card required for Kenya to Uganda bus travel?
Border officers may ask for an International Certificate of Vaccination (Yellow Fever card). Get vaccinated at least 10 days before you travel and carry the original card in your hand luggage.
How does the Malaba border crossing work on the bus?
At Malaba the coach stops at the One Stop Border Post. Passengers clear exit and entry immigration in the same building while the coach and luggage go through customs. Allow 1–2 hours during busy periods.
What documents do I need travelling from Nairobi to Kigali by road?
A valid passport (or EAC-accepted national ID for citizens of member states), your Yellow Fever card, and a visa or East African Tourist Visa if your nationality requires one. The route crosses Uganda, so you clear two borders.
What do I need for Nairobi to Juba or Bujumbura?
A passport valid for at least six months, the correct visa for South Sudan or Burundi where required, and your Yellow Fever card. Check entry rules with the relevant embassy before booking.
